SYMPOSIUM:
Using technology to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions

21 May 2024 | Sydney, NSW

This symposium brought together ecologists, transport agencies, technology experts, all levels of government, NGOs, industry, and the community.

It was produced by EIANZ and developed through a partnership between ANET and WSP. The event was sponsored by Transport for NSW.

The symposium discussed technology including:
• Animal detection and identification systems
• Animal deterrent systems (e.g. virtual fences)
• In-car and roadside warning systems for motorists
• Vehicle automation.

Literature review and directions paper

In 2025 Transport for NSW released a paper that came out of the symposium. Led by Dr Rodney van der Ree, the paper makes thirteen specific recommendations and suggests future topics for discussion and analysis. Based on the report recommendations, Transport for NSW has announced it will now progress with:

  • a trial of AI assisted animal detection systems linked to ‘smart’ roadside signage (Recommendations 5 & 8)

  • controlled trials of increased illumination with a focus on light-covered pavement marking (Recommendation 14).
